“Free will is nothing but a myth!”

If only this were true!

Like I said before

…it would be sweeeeeeeeet!

In all sincerity, I envy the atheists.

The blissful embrace of irrationality masked by self-proclaimed intellectualism.

I would love to live in that bubble.

Sadly, I cannot.

I am burdened by logic and reason.

My damnable rationality causes me to trip over statements like:

In reality I don’t think there’s any free will at all. If you look at the things that come into account as to whether or not someone is going to do the right thing in the next two seconds amid a temptation to do otherwise…

Despite your claim to the contrary, Mr. Sapolsky, you DO believe in free will.

Because doing “the right thing in the next two seconds amid a temptation to do otherwise” is impossible for rocks, bananas and vacuum cleaners.

There is no ‘right thing’ in a Universe that can’t be anything other than what it is.

The concept of  ‘temptation’ makes no sense unless we believe it can be resisted.

And THAT is what really annoys me.

There are several temptations I’d LOVE to indulge.

I truly wish free will was indeed and illusion.

I wish the arrogant atheists were right!

But free will is so patently obvious, Sapolsky even says:

Where we need to do the heavy lifting is when we’re making judgments about volition in areas where we harshly judge people.

If there is no free will, how am I capable of making any judgments?

…and what is “judgment” anyway?!!

See?

This is why I have to believe God exists.

God makes choices.

Being made ‘in the image of God’ means I make choices too.

…much as I hate to admit it.

  1. Big think? Really? If there is no such thing as God or free will, why make the video? If you have not got a clue as to what to do about it, or even why you should do anything about it, what is the point in telling people about a problem? Based upon what he believes, he has no idea how to structure a humane society. Does he even know how to define one?

    1. Many problems accompany the idea that a higher power does not exist. We can’t even begin to think (let alone have ‘big’ thoughts) without assuming our thoughts are something other than an illusion. And deciding to think about something requires…free will. So, yeah, I’m not impressed with the video either. If there is no free will, the video itself was the result of mindless chemical processes. Let’s forget we ever saw it!
